Oxfordshire Artweeks 2026 in Eynsham- an exhibition by Paul and Jane Tomlinson

My sister Jane and I will be showing our work together in May for Artweeks, Oxfordshire's annual visual arts festival.

My drawings and paintings are of townscapes and the built environment and my sister's paintings are inspired by the natural world.

We will be exhibiting at Mill St Arts in Eynsham, along with Neil Mason (photography) and Julie Sailing-Free (painting)

Final one from a brilliant week in Nimes last month: I had a first go at this amazing Roman structure but wasn’t pleased with the result so had a second go to try to incorporate this huge structure onto the page in its entirety. It involved bending perspective a little but I think I got there in the end.

As autumn sets in here in England I’m remembering my trip to the south of France last month (where summer still lingered) and my opportunity to sketch one of the best preserved Roman buildings in existence anywhere: the remarkable Maison Carrée in Nimes. Just back from a fabulous trip to the south coast this weekend to catching up with old friends. No trip to the seaside is complete without fish and chips, and a failure to sketch the best fish and chip shop in Swanage would be positively rude. This is The Fish Plaice, down on the sea front. I can report that the cod and chips were delicious.

Last week’s superb workshop in Nimes with @ianfennelly and friends kicked off in the Place du Marche in the middle of town, featuring a palm tree which is apparently famous in local circles, plus a cafe whose upstairs windows gave us a good excuse to use a vibrant emerald green in the composition.

Just warming up for a week of drawing and painting with friends in France 🇫🇷 with this study of Tom Tower in Oxford. This beautiful architectural masterpiece, which stands over the entrance to Christ Church, was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and constructed in the 1670s.

Another drawing from Oxford: this is the Museum of the History of Science, wedged in between the Bodleian Library and Exeter College along Broad St. I had to turn up very early in the morning to sketch this out to avoid the crowds, tourists, buses and delivery vehicles.

One of my occasional pub portraits: this is The Abingdon Arms at Beckley, near Oxford. The rear garden overlooks Otmoor and in the past the pub has been visited by the likes of Evelyn Waugh and Lewis Carroll. I can report that they do very nice pizzas on Wednesdays.

One of my favourite subjects is the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford. This little masterpiece was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and was built around 1670. It is still used for ceremonial occasions by the University.

I got access to Exeter College in Oxford recently (thanks to the co-operation of the porters and the Domestic Bursar) and was able to draw this view of the magnificent chapel within the college grounds. There has been a chapel on the college grounds since the 14th century, though this chapel was constructed in the 1850s.

A little piece of Birmingham’s modern cultural heritage, now lying boarded up and disused: this is The Crown, located directly behind New St Station. This Victorian pub was one of the hubs for the birth of heavy metal in the late 60s, and hosted Black Sabbath for their first gig in ‘68, plus The Who, Robert Plant, Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Status Quo, Duran Duran and UB40. There are moves to preserve and revamp the place. I hope they succeed.

A view of the beautiful tower of the Church of St Lazarus in Larnaka, Cyprus. It now belongs to the Greek Orthodox Church, but this remarkable building has, in earlier times, operated as a Catholic Church under French and Venetian rule in the 13th -16th centuries and then briefly as a mosque during the early days of the Ottoman era before subsequently being used for both Orthodox and Catholic services. I sat in the shade under the colonnade to draw from this angle and escape the fierce sun..

This is the Panagia Angeloktisti (‘built by angels’) Church in Kiti, a few kms west of Larnaka in Cyprus. It a magnificent example of a Greek Orthodox Church built in the Byzantine style, with a 11th century dome built on the ruins of an early Byzantine basilica.

One from last week’s visit to Beziers. This is the junction of Rue de la Republique and Rue Paul Riquet. It was so great to be able to draw and paint en plein air on a sunny day with great company in such a beautiful place.
